Catalog Description

Prerequisite: Completion of POST Basic Academy and employment as a Peace Officer assigned to a Special Weapons and Tactics team
Hours: 24 (5 lecture, 19 laboratory)
Description: Reality based training focusing on team challenges designed to test a SWAT team's methods and capabilities. Emphasis on team movement, hostage rescues, advanced firearms usage, physical endurance, and team problem exercises. May be repeated for credit to meet legally mandated requirements. (pass/no pass grading) (not degree applicable)

Course Objectives

LECTURE OBJECTIVES:
1. Analyze complex critical incident scenarios and develop solutions.
2. Identify and recognize safety issues involving use of firearms.
LABORATORY OBJECTIVES:
1. Analyze and solve a series of physical and mental challenges as a group.
2. Demonstrate team movement and physical endurance to employ available resources to effectively resolve a critical incident.
3. Demonstrate proper special weapon usage to solve critical incident situations involving use of lethal force.
4. Practice high-risk room to room building searches.
5. Apply dynamic entry techniques and evaluate outcomes of demonstrated skills.
6. Compare and contrast high risk warrant service versus hostage rescue techniques.
7. Differentiate the roles and duties of an inner and outer perimeter.
8. Design a plan to handle a critical incident scenario.
9. Apply previously learned or new knowledge and/or skills through practical application scenarios.

            1. Instructor will explain and demonstrate safe and proper building entry-and-search techniques, followed by students practicing techniques in teams.
