Hours: 54 lecture
Description:Theoretical perspectives and practical applications of the use of music and movement with children from infancy to age eight in group settings. Emphasis on exploration of music and movement as ways to involve young children with cultural diversity and traditions, creative expression, promotion of an understanding of the connection to healthy living and physical activity, and stimulation of brain development. Methods and materials used in singing, rhythms, creative music, reading and listening, development of music and movement lesson plans, and creation of inexpensive musical instruments. (pass/no pass grading) (noncredit)

Course Objectives
1. Describe how various theoretical perspectives promote the development of young children through music and movement experiences;
2. Explain the benefits of music and movement experiences to the physical, cognitive, social and emotional development of young children;
3. Utilize a variety of strategies for incorporating music and movement as tools for managing group behavior and easing daily transitions;
4. Develop an understanding of the key role of music and movement in stimulating synaptic connections of the neurons in the brain and coordinating bilateral development;
5. Practice creative expression and support for healthy exercise through music and movement experiences with young children;
6. Recognize and value a variety of cultures and traditions through application of music and movement;
7. Describe the basic concepts in music: beat, tempo, loud, soft and expression;
8. Develop age-appropriate music and movement lesson plans for children from infancy to age eight in group settings;
9. Create inexpensive musical instruments for young children; and
10. Practice playing a variety of musical instruments: autoharp, piano, guitar, recorder.

Methods of Instruction
- Lecture/Discussion
Lecture:
- Instructor will provide a lecture and lead a discussion on the various benefits of music and movement experiences to the physical, cognitive, social and emotional development of the young child.
- Instructor will lead a lecture/discussion on the key role of music and movement in stimulating synaptic connections of the neurons in the brain and coordinating bilateral development. Students will summarize the material presented in the lecture, and make a clear connection to information outlined in the text on the myelination process, and/or the video on the effects of music on children.
- Instructor will weekly lead students in a sing along that demonstrates different skill sets for children such as finger plays, gross motor songs, or rote knowledge memorization. Post songs, students will get into small groups and analyze the development that may take place for children as well as how it can be used to support classroom curriculum or classroom environment (social skill development.)

Reading Assignments
1. Read "The effect of a music/movement program on preschooler's motor rhythmic ability" (Venetsanou, Donti & Koutsouba 2014) and discuss in small groups. 2. Research various sources for examples of American Folk songs, reading about the history and evolution of traditional songs, chants, games and incorporate into students song binder.
Writing, Problem Solving or Performance
1. Develop and write lesson plans for young children that incorporate developmentally appropriate practices into experiences with music and movement. 2. Practice playing simple tunes for young children on the autoharp, piano, ukulele, or recorder.
Other (Term projects, research papers, portfolios, etc.)
1. Create inexpensive handmade musical instruments for use with young children in music and movement exercises. 2. Research a variety of cultures and tradition through exploration of music (songs, stories, chants, games).
