Catalog Description

Prerequisite: Enrolled as LVN to RN Upward Mobility student
Hours: 9 lecture
Description: Provides the LVN Upward Mobility student with the content/concepts for the management of nursing care for the child with complex nursing needs, such as a high-risk medical condition and chronic or end-of-life care. The content rounds out the basic pediatric nursing content the student received in the vocational nursing program and meets BRN curriculum requirements. (CSU)

Course Objectives

The student completing this course will be able to:
1. Use the nursing process to write a plan of care for the child with complex nursing care needs, such as a high-risk medical condition, chronic illness or end-of-life care.
2. Discuss practice and ethical standards of care when working with children with high-risk conditions.
3. Compare and contrast growth and development issues for the child with a chronic or high-risk medical condition and complex nursing care needs.
4. Analyze data to identify family teaching needs and develop a written plan of care for discharge or ongoing care.
5. Achieve 68 percentile on the Kaplan Integrated test Pediatrics A.

          Lecture:

          1. After completing the assigned readings for a specific case study or learning module, The student will answer the post test questions. Using the nursing process as a framework, faculty will facilitate discussion of the key content and guide the student in the writing of a nursing care plan.
          2. The student will be assigned to small groups and each group will identify a discharge teaching need based on the case study. The group will research information, develop a teaching plan for the child/parents and present the information to the class in a 5-minute presentation. Faculty will facilitate discussion of the key content.

          Distance Learning

          1. Faculty will enter a question in the discussion board pertaining to the content covered of the disease process. The student will answer the question and respond to two other student replies. Faculty will provide constructive feed back to the initial student post.

          Reading will be assigned in the Pediatric Nursing textbook. 1. The student will view/read the assigned case study, Appendicitis of 5 year old. The student will be prepared to answer the questions related to: 1) Disease pathophysiology 2) Treatment 1) Physical assessment age-related 2) Medication safety age-related 3) Legal consent 4) Post-op plan of care 5) Pain assessment 6) Cultural issues 2. Students will view and read the assigned case study gastroenteritis of 5 month old. The student will be prepared to answer and discuss the questions related to: 1) Disease pathophysiology 2) Treatment 3) Dehydration assessment 4) Fluid calculations 5) Family/nurse interaction 6) Psychosocial issues for family and infant

          Writing, Problem Solving or Performance

          1. Students will view computerized interactive case study (VSim) presentation on asthma and complete learning modules based on information in the case studies. 2. The student will complete the fluid maintenance balance on weight of a patient. What is the 24 hour fluid maintenance of a child weighing 8 pounds?
