Catalog Description Hours: 54 lecture Description: Provides an overview of Probation, Parole, and Supervised Release, as well as a modern-day comparison of each type of Correctional supervision. The coursework highlights tasks associated with pre-sentence investigations and supervision as well as the requirements and challenges of delivering purposeful, individualized, proportional, multidimensional, proactive, and responsive supervision that contributes to successful re-entry into society. This course also provides a combination of relevant course readings, interactive lesson plans, scenario-based exercises, and arranged courtroom and in-field experiences. (CSU) Course Student Learning Outcomes CSLO #1: Describe legal, jurisdictional, and methodological similarities and differences between probation, parole and supervised release. CSLO #2: Compare and contrast the types of criminal supervision caseloads including but not limited to supervision requirements, authority, and jurisdiction. CSLO #3: Identify the importance of enforcing the conditions of supervision, protecting the community and assisting the offender to have a successful supervision outcome. CSLO #4: Analyze and discuss the efficacy of agency policies governing officer safety, training, equipment, integrity, and effective, proportionate, multidimensional, proactive and responsive supervision methods and ideologies. Observe and participate in classroom exercises simulating the application of supervision methods and strategies, such as reviewing supervision conditions, non-compliance meetings, and treatment referrals. Identify and analyze the challenges of effectively supervising individuals of various races, ethnicities, generations, gender, and/or non-English speaking populations. Identify, analyze and develop strategies to address non-compliance, e.g., new arrest, drug use, possession of child pornography, repetitious technical violations such as lying, failure to report, absconding, willful failure to pay restitution, fine or complete community service work. Analyze and discuss the efficacy of agency policies governing officer safety, training, equipment, integrity, and effective, proportionate, multidimensional, proactive and responsive supervision methods and ideologies. Engage in small group classroom discussions on relevant problem-solving issues and deliver post-discussion verbal or written solutions. If arranged, participate in a ride along assignment with a supervision officer and prepare a written report summarizing the experience and its relevance. Overview The Administration of Justice program offers students an Associate Degree for Transfer which prepares students for transfer into the California State University system. In addition, there are three associate degrees offered with specific areas of concentration. Each concentration has specific core courses that are required of all students. Courses are available in law enforcement, specializing in police activities that promote public safety and service to the community; courts, specializing in responsibilities to the public through the trial system of adjudication; and corrections, where sentenced individuals are subjected to society's effort to provide accountability and correct the deviant behavior. The Administration of Justice program also offers a number of POST certified peace officer training courses, including PC 832 Arrest and Firearms, as well as Modules III and II of the POST Regular Basic Course (Law Enforcement Academy). Successful completion of the two modules allows students to be hired as Level III or Level II Reserve Peace Officers in California. The Department also offers some in-service POST training courses for continuing professional development. TRANSFER MAJOR REQUIREMENTS in Administration of Justice are available in the Counseling Center. In all cases, students should consult with a counselor for specific transfer requirements. Four-year graduates in Administration of Justice are qualified for career pathways in law enforcement, the courts and corrections.
