ALH 0007. Medical Asepsis and Surgical Procedures

Prerequisite: Completion of ALH 1, 2, 3, and 4 with grades of "C" or better
Hours: 99 (45 lecture, 54 laboratory)
Students will acquire knowledge to apply theory to practice while assisting with minor office surgeries and wound care. Sterile and aseptic techniques, sterile field and instrument sanitization procedures and protocols prepare students with the necessary skills to practice within the scope of practice of a medical assistant. Students will perform training for recognizing risks of bloodborne pathogens, infection control, body substance isolation (BSI), and personal protection equipment in accordance with OSHA standards specific to the healthcare professional and in accordance of the scope of practice of a medical assistant. Provides the American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support/CPR certification for Healthcare Providers. (letter grade only) (not transferable)

(letter grade only) (not transferable) Course Student Learning Outcomes CSLO #1: Aseptic technique and infection control measures by demonstrating necessary Universal and Standard precautions in relation to blood borne pathogens, and the different levels of exposure due to direct and indirect routes of transmission. CSLO #2: Execute wound care treatment protocols including topical medication and sterile dressing applications while being able to identify and coordinate treatment of infection in a wound care (or post-op) patient. CSLO #3: Safely and accurately perform various methods of equipment and surface disinfection and instrument sterilization while exercising compliance with OSHA and other safety agencies. CSLO #4: Perform an assessment on an adult, child or infant and perform chest compressions, and establish an airway within the American Heart Association protocols. Remove foreign body and restore a patient airway. CSLO #5: Assess and identify the signs and symptoms of a medical emergency within a physician office laboratory and perform skills in accordance of the scope of practice of a medical assistant. CSLO #6: Evaluate various instruments used in the clinical setting according to their classification and usage. Correctly process specimens, assemble minor surgical trays. prepare instruments/equipment/materials, within the scope of practice for assisting in minor surgeries at a physician/provider's office. Demonstrate correct aseptic technique and infection control measures; safely and accurately perform various methods of equipment and surface disinfection and instrument sterilization while exercising compliance with OSHA and other safety agencies. 2. Execute wound care treatment protocols including topical medication and sterile dressing applications while being able to identify and coordinate treatment of infection in a wound care (or post-op) patient. 3. Demonstrate medical emergencies in a clinical setting and respond per provider's office protocols and American Heart Association guidelines for Basic Life Support certification.  Lab Objectives: 1. Demonstrate wrapping and labeling of instruments for sterilization and disinfection along with proper use of Autoclave. 2. Describe disinfection of operative suite. 3. Explain wound care treatments e.g. wound vacs, skin grafts, debridement and medications. 4. Demonstrate application of wound dressings (sterile and non-sterile) 5. Demonstrate high quality CPR and setting up AED per current American Heart Association guidelines 6. Describe and demonstrate all AHA (American Heart Association) skills on mannequins until Emergency Medical Services per AHA current standards 7. Pap smear Skill Demonstrations Example: Following the lecture on Wound Care and instructor demonstration of placing a dressing over the wound, students will practice applying sterile dressings in a lab setting for skills check off. Repeatable No Methods of Instruction Laboratory Lecture/Discussion Distance Learning Lab: Following lecture and discussion, instructor will demonstrate proper sterilization techniques and how to set up the surgical suite for a minor surgical procedure. Lecture: Instructor PowerPoint presentation on Sterilization and Minor Surgical Procedures in the office. Students will discuss what constitutes “minor” in office procedure following the presentation. Distance Learning Instructor PowerPoint presentation on Wound Care in the office. Students will participate in an online discussion on staying within the Medical Assisting Scope of Work while assisting with Wound Care. Typical Out of Class Assignments Reading Assignments 1. Read section in textbook on sanitation, disinfection and sterilization to prepare for discussion in class. 2. Read section in textbook, on assisting with minor surgical procedures with discussion on what is deemed minor for a classroom discussion next class. Writing, Problem Solving or Performance 1. Write essay on the importance of sanitation, disinfection, and sterilization. 2. Type up responses to classroom emergency scenarios and turn in for credit. ALH 0009 - Medical Assisting Clinical Practicum Experience

Catalog Description Prerequisite: Completion of ALH 0005, 0006, 0007, and 0008 with grades of "C" or better Hours: 162 laboratory Description: Students will acquire clinical Medical Assisting experience in the work setting under the supervision of a licensed physician in a Board-Certified medical office setting or outpatient facility. (letter grade only) (not transferable) Course Student Learning Outcomes CSLO #1: Demonstrate competencies of learned clinical skills under the supervision of a licensed physician. CSLO #2: Apply all Law/Ethics and HIPAA standards while performing 160 hours at assigned practicum site with two hours of onboarding. Other Example: 1. Attendance at both mandatory meetings. 2. Completion of weekly journal entries for Instructor. 3. Instructor site evaluation. 4. Timesheet signed off by supervisor showing successful completion of 162 hours. Repeatable No Methods of Instruction Laboratory Lab: Following the first mandatory meeting/lecture, the students will perform 162 lab hours in a board-certified physician’s office, medical clinic or allied health facility with daily timesheet and supervisor evaluation filled out correctly. Following the second mandatory meeting/lecture, the students will turn in required forms and documents to instructor and do oral presentation on their externship. Typical Out of Class Assignments Reading Assignments 1. Read orientation packet prior to clinical placement and be prepared to discuss. 2. Read and review examples of Medical Assisting resumes to create and submit personal resume to instructor prior to placement. Writing, Problem Solving or Performance 1. Write weekly journal entries and submit through LMS. 2. Write and present final presentation on practicum and submit through LMS. Other (Term projects, research papers, portfolios, etc.) 1. Keep continual notes throughout 162 hours to assist in journal entries and final project. 2. At completion of practicum, submit signed time sheet, site supervisor evaluation form, and presentation. Required Materials Other materials and-or supplies required of students that contribute to the cost of the course. Instructor to provide packet containing all requirements and forms necessary for practicum completion. Students will provide notebook for practicum.
