Students will perform these skills with in a mock operating room set-up with appropriate surgical equipment, proper body mechanics, and surgical attire. Repeatable No Methods of Instruction Laboratory Lab: Following lecture and discussion, instructor will demonstrate proper arrangement(s) of furniture and surgical equipment for a given surgical procedure. This will be followed by students performing these tasks/skills in the lab setting with skills checkoff. Following lecture and discussion, instructor will demonstrate how to correctly and safely handle surgical instruments and supplies. Read section in textbook on the general structure and operating room. Students will identify the key principles of the structure or the operating room. Students will analyze the how and the why of each key principle of the structure and the complications that may arise. 2. Read section in textbook and review the various supplies and instrument sets for surgical procedures. Students will identify the key principles of specific supplies and instrument sets corresponding to the specified surgical procedures. Students will evaluate the implications and reasoning for each procedure in terms of specifics and understanding instruments. Writing, Problem Solving or Performance Read section on Patient Transport and Transfers and respond to critical thinking clinical application questions. For Example: Submit a reflection on the importance of body mechanics when transporting patients and setting up surgical equipment. ALH 0026 - Surgical Technology Clinical Practicum

Catalog Description Prerequisite: Completion of ALH 0024 and ALH 0025 with grades of "C" or better Hours: 540 laboratory Description: Provides the student with hands-on experience in the surgical suite caring for patients under the supervision of a surgical technologist or a registered nurse. They will also gain experience in patient and staff interaction and communication. It prepares the student for the national certification examination. (letter grade only) (not transferable) Course Student Learning Outcomes CSLO #1: Apply surgical aseptic techniques and safety protocols for handing and managing instruments, equipment and supplies during each type of surgery while exercising compliance with OSHA and blood borne pathogen training. CSLO #2: Evaluate basic pharmacology identification and quantities commonly used by the surgeon. CSLO #3: Evaluate various instruments and equipment used in the surgical setting according to their classification and usage, and correctly label and process specimens, assemble surgical trays, prepare instruments/equipment/materials, within the scope of practice for a surgical technologist. Instructor will provide students with a list of questions to be addressed in their reflective presentations. This reflection presentation will be graded with a scoring rubric. Skill Demonstrations Example: Students will be required to have their site practicum supervisor complete a clinical evaluation of skills covered while performing their required hours and at least 125 different surgical procedures in the surgical setting. Other Example: 1. Attendance at both mandatory meetings. 2. Completion of weekly journal entries for Instructor. 3. Instructor site evaluation. 4. Timesheet signed off by supervisor showing successful completion of 540 hours. 5. Check off of the required 125 specialty surgical procedures. Repeatable No Methods of Instruction Laboratory Lab: Evaluation of skills performed by the student will be through competency checklists as demonstrated to the supervisor. Some examples include: proper equipment for the specific surgical specialty, patient and specimen identification, applying communication, and professional and ethical standards. Instructor will monitor student progress through contact with the supervisor via email, phone, and site visits. Following the first mandatory meeting/lecture on orientations to surgical specialties, the students will perform at lease 125 different surgical procedures and at a minimum of 540 hours of clinicals with daily timesheet and supervisor evaluation. Following the second mandatory meeting/lecture on surgical specialties, the students will turn in required forms and documents to instructor and do oral presentation on LMS about their experience within their externship. Typical Out of Class Assignments Reading Assignments 1. Read orientation packet prior to clinical placement and be prepared to discuss 2. The student is to read the appropriate section in the textbook that covers the surgical procedures the student will be assigned to the next day in the clinical setting. For example: if the student is assigned to assist with a Cholecystectomy the next day, the student is to read the section on Cholecystectomy. Writing, Problem Solving or Performance 1. The student is to keep a journal of surgical procedures on which they have participated, this will be submitted through their LMS. The student must describe one surgical procedure per day and their daily duties. 2. Write and present final presentation on practicum and submit through LMS. Other (Term projects, research papers, portfolios, etc.) Each student shall be assigned to a Preceptor at the training institution who coaches the student in learning skills and monitors their performance daily. The student is expected to perform in the role of the scrub technologist on a variety of case assignments over a period of 540 hours. In addition, the student must show documentation of independent practice on at least 125 different surgical procedures. These specialties include neurosurgery, vascular surgery, orthopedic surgery and others. Prepares the student for the national certification exam.
