They will also gain experience in patient and staff interaction and communication. It prepares the student for the national certification examination. (letter grade only) (not transferable) Course Student Learning Outcomes CSLO #1: Apply surgical aseptic techniques and safety protocols for handing and managing instruments, equipment and supplies during each type of surgery while exercising compliance with OSHA and blood borne pathogen training. Demonstrate effective infection control methods: aseptic technique; sterile technique; sterilization and disinfection. Maintain safe practices for patients and personnel with regards to standard precautions and biological, mechanical and chemical hazards. Demonstrate proper behavior for healthcare professionals e.g. communication, attendance, following Standards of Practice and obeying institutional policies and procedures. Demonstrate an understanding of proper labeling for the identity and quantity of the medications administered by the surgeon. Instructor will provide students with a list of questions to be addressed in their reflective presentations. This reflection presentation will be graded with a scoring rubric. Skill Demonstrations Example: Students will be required to have their site practicum supervisor complete a clinical evaluation of skills covered while performing their required hours and at least 125 different surgical procedures in the surgical setting. Other Example: 1. Attendance at both mandatory meetings. 2. Completion of weekly journal entries for Instructor. 3. Instructor site evaluation. 4. Timesheet signed off by supervisor showing successful completion of 540 hours. 5. Check off of the required 125 specialty surgical procedures. Repeatable No Methods of Instruction Laboratory Lab: Evaluation of skills performed by the student will be through competency checklists as demonstrated to the supervisor. Some examples include: proper equipment for the specific surgical specialty, patient and specimen identification, applying communication, and professional and ethical standards. Instructor will monitor student progress through contact with the supervisor via email, phone, and site visits. Following the first mandatory meeting/lecture on orientations to surgical specialties, the students will perform at lease 125 different surgical procedures and at a minimum of 540 hours of clinicals with daily timesheet and supervisor evaluation. Following the second mandatory meeting/lecture on surgical specialties, the students will turn in required forms and documents to instructor and do oral presentation on LMS about their experience within their externship. The student is to read the appropriate section in the textbook that covers the surgical procedures the student will be assigned to the next day in the clinical setting. For example: if the student is assigned to assist with a Cholecystectomy the next day, the student is to read the section on Cholecystectomy. Writing, Problem Solving or Performance 1. The student is to keep a journal of surgical procedures on which they have participated, this will be submitted through their LMS. The student must describe one surgical procedure per day and their daily duties. 2. Write and present final presentation on practicum and submit through LMS. Other (Term projects, research papers, portfolios, etc.) Each student shall be assigned to a Preceptor at the training institution who coaches the student in learning skills and monitors their performance daily. The student is expected to perform in the role of the scrub technologist on a variety of case assignments over a period of 540 hours. In addition, the student must show documentation of independent practice on at least 125 different surgical procedures.
