Catalog Description Course Student Learning Outcomes CSLO #1: Apply an interdisciplinary framework to understand social, political and cultural issues. They will be given the essay questions before the dialogue presentations so that they are prepared and can synthesize reading materials on the topic. The essays will be assessed on the development of the positions taken, evidence supporting the position and thoroughness in responding to counter-arguments. Projects Example: Students will select a contemporary cultural issue to investigate and conduct interviews to access public opinion. They will produce a short video that includes interview clips and researched information to evaluate public perception and evidence-based information. The project will be evaluated based on the following: proposal thesis, content clarity, educational value, visual quality, integration of primary source information and general appeal. Repeatable No Methods of Instruction Lecture/Discussion Lecture: Instructor: Invite representatives from the Arab and Muslim communities to discuss the fundamental principles of Islam. Also, have students view the documentary, Inside Islam: What One Billion Muslims Think. Students: Experience an increased understanding of Islam and the people who practice the religion. Understand the role of religion within cultures. Instructor: Show the documentary, The Lottery of Birth, as an introduction to critical thinking and active listening. Discuss forms of Argumentation (Ethos, Pathos, Logos) and identify the agents of socialization. Students: While viewing the documentary, students must identity examples of how arguments are used to socialize societies into belief systems based on Ethos, Pathos and Logos. Non-violent Drug Offenses 2. After reading and discussing, The New Jim Crow, and viewing the documentary, Slavery By Another Name describe in detail the following: 1. How was slavery preserved in Jim Crow? 2. Describe "Law and Order." 3. How was "Jim Crow" preserved in "Law and Order?" 4. What are the steps through which African American men become permanent parts of a racial under-caste? 5. What are some civil liberties for African Americans that have been eliminated by the drug war? Explained how this happened. Writing, Problem Solving or Performance Grade the News 1. Select and watch one Network News show Network News (ABC, NBC, CBS), one Cable News (CNN, CNBC, MSNBC), and a political left (Democracy Now) and political right (Fox News) program to compare and contrast. Write a three-page summary of their effectiveness in delivering the news. Use the following as a guide: Newsworthiness Context Explanation Relevance Civic Contribution Enterprise Fairness 2. Assignment: You Be the Reporter A white South Carolina police officer was arrested and charged with murder after video showed him fatally shooting a fleeing, unarmed black man in the back. North Charleston Police Officer Michael T. Slager, 33, can be seen shooting 50-year-old Walter Scott after a confrontation on Saturday, according to The Post and Courier. Slager chases Scott and shoots at him eight times in the video recorded by a passerby and obtained by The New York Times. Unaware that he was being video taped, Slager reported on his radio, “Shots fired and the subject is down. He took my Taser,” according to the Times. Assignment: (a) Write the article that would have appeared in papers had not the murder been video taped. (b) Write the article based on the evidence as revealed in the investigation.
