Catalog Description Hours: 54 lecture Description: This course provides students with a basic understanding of the Chicana in contemporary society. Emphasis is placed on establishing a framework from which to view the historical development and treatment of women in modern society. Includes an analysis of selected Latina issues currently affecting Chicana women. (CSU, UC) Course Student Learning Outcomes CSLO #1: Critically analyze the social, political and economic factors that influence the status of Chicanas in contemporary society. CSLO #2: Evaluate the relationship between prominent Chicana/Mexican archetypes and the contemporary status of Mexican American Women. CSLO #3: Evaluate the historical and contemporary condition of Chicanas and Latinas by exploring the relationship between political power and gender oppression. Effective Term Fall 2026 Course Type Credit - Degree-applicable Contact Hours 54 Outside of Class Hours 108 Total Student Learning Hours 162 Course Objectives 1 - Analyze and articulate concepts such as race and racism, racialization, ethnicity, equity, ethno-centrism, eurocentrism, white supremacy, self-determination, liberation, decolonization, sovereignty, imperialism, settler colonialism, and anti-racism as analyzed in any one or more of the following:Latina and Latino American (Chicana/o) Studies. 2 - Critically analyze the intersection of race and racism as they relate to class, gender, sexuality, religion, spirituality, national origin, immigrationstatus, ability, tribal citizenship, sovereignty, language, and/or age in Latina and Latino (Chicana/o) American communities. 3 - Apply theory and knowledge produced by Latina and Latino (Chicana/o) American communities to describe the critical events, histories, cultures,intellectual traditions, contributions, lived-experiences and social struggles of those groups with a particular emphasis on agency and group-affirmation. 4 - Analyze the societal factors contributing to the physical and sexual violence perpetrated against women. Identify violence intervention and prevention programs. 5 - Examine the cultural, social, and economic factors impacting Chicana/Latina health. Reports Example: Students will read Borderlands by Gloria Anzaldua and write a Book Report summarizing and analyzing the content and author. Repeatable No Methods of Instruction Lecture/Discussion Distance Learning Lecture: Instructor will provider a lecture on Chicana Activism. Students will discuss in pairs the differences and similarities between the Chicana Feminist Movement to that of the Chicano Movement and the American Women’s Movement,from the 1960s/70s to the present. Students will report back to the whole class. Distance Learning Instructor will post a slideshow on the topic of Chicana art. Students will view the slideshow and then post in an online discussion which piece of art or artist resonated with them and why? Students will also be asked to discuss how art helps us analyze race and racism. Typical Out of Class Assignments Reading Assignments Students will read an essay from Chicana Movidas and create 2 discussion questions that they will then answer themselves based on the essay. Writing, Problem Solving or Performance Students will watch a documentary on Chicana Archetypes and write a response paper anaylzing the importance of archetypes in Chicana culture.
