Prerequisite: Completion of FIRE 100 with grade of C or better or, 1) A signed statement by the agency's Fire Chief or designee stating the sponsored student has completed all SFT training requirements and skills sheets for Firefighter-1, or 2) Documentation of approval from the California State Fire Training for a certification retest, or 3) Completion of a Firefighter I academy and applying for certification testing
Hours: 56 (8 lecture, 48 laboratory)
Prepares students to meet the State Fire Training (SFT) requirements for Firefighter I (FFI) and II (FFII) including the capstone knowledge and skills necessary to pass FFI FFII. Upon successful completion, students receive a pass letter from SFT and a FFI and FFII pass certificate from the college. (pass/no pass grading) (not transferable)

Standard grading will be used: 90-100%=A, 80-89%=B, etc. Sample Question: Firefighter Certification testing includes which of the following? A. Skill testing B. Written testing C. Manipulative and Physical testing Skill Demonstrations Example: Given an uncharged hose line, and using identified techniques and safety guidelines, students will demonstrate the proper procedure to advance an uncharged hose line. Students will be graded on their ability to complete all steps in accordance with State Fire Training skill sheets. This is a pass/fail evaluation. Repeatable No Methods of Instruction Laboratory Lecture/Discussion Lab: The instructor will demonstration how to properly spot, raise and lower a 24’ extension ladder. The instructor will then supervise as students demonstrate how to raise and lower a 24’ extension ladder for a given scenario, i.e., raise ladder to a 2nd story window for a rescue. Lecture: The instructor will facilitate classroom discussion on the firefighter capstone certification testing process and how the process works. Students will recite the process. The instructor will lecture on how to access and use a firefighter skill testing sheets on donning personal protective equipment from the State Fire Training web site. Students will each download the assigned skill sheet and demonstrate how to don personal protective equipment based on the steps indicated on the skill sheet. Typical Out of Class Assignments Reading Assignments 1. Students will read assigned State Fire Training skill sheet on donning Personal Protective clothing. Students will outline each step to an assigned group. 2. Students will read assigned material on the firefighter certification testing process. Through classroom discussion, students will present and outline each step. Writing, Problem Solving or Performance 1. Given a simulated fire scenario, students will determine where to best place a ladder for rescuing a person from a 2nd floor window. 2. Given two pieces of rope of unequal diameters, students will demonstrate how best to tie the two ropes together.
