Catalog Description Formerly known as PHED 3A Hours: 36 activity per unit Description: Designed to educate students in the areas of basic aerobic and cardiovascular fitness using a variety of fitness equipment, as well as evaluate and improve present aerobic fitness level. (CSU, UC-with unit limitation) Course Student Learning Outcomes CSLO #1: Outline a fitness program that encompasses all the rules of cardiovascular fitness. CSLO #2: Design a circuit training program using aerobic machines that challenges the body to maintain target heart rate during workouts. CSLO #3: Outline common injuries associated with cardiovascular fitness workouts as well as the prevention of future injuries. Identify and demonstrate the various programs available for use on at least four cardiovascular fitness machines. 2. Critique and evaluate cardiovascular fitness and compose a basic fitness program, using the cardiovascular machines. 3. Chart the major muscles of the body that are used during an aerobic workout on the different aerobic machines. 4. Formulate a fitness program that encompasses all the rules of cardiovascular fitness. 5. Recommend caloric intake within the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) as it corresponds to caloric output in an aerobic fitness program. 6. Diagnose and formulate a plan to improve common injuries associated with cardiovascular fitness workouts as well as the prevention of future injuries. 7. Model a beginning circuit training program using aerobic machines that challenges the body to maintain target heart rate during workouts. 8. Distinguish the differences between healthy and unhealthy readings of cholesterol, BMI, recovering heart rate and body fat. 9. Construct a basic aerobic fitness program using jump ropes, stairs/steps, hiking, walking, plyometrics and other non traditional cardiovascular fitness machines. Skill Demonstrations Example: Accurately demonstrate how to use a basic program on the elliptical trainer and discuss what benefits that particular program addresses. Repeatable No Methods of Instruction Activity Distance Learning Activity: The instructor will lecture on body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle endurance and strength using calipers, treadmill and free weights. The student will set goals to improve during the course of the semester in some of the components of fitness. Instructor will write and demonstrate a basic abdominal workout program. Students will complete the abdominal workout. Distance Learning Instructor will present an online lecture on caloric intake within the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) as it corresponds to caloric output in an aerobic fitness program. The student will create a workout meal plan following the DGA. Typical Out of Class Assignments Reading Assignments 1. Read a nutrition and fitness periodical and write a one-page report on nutritional guidelines. 2. Read an article about metabolic disease syndrome and write about how aerobic exercise can affect it. Writing, Problem Solving or Performance 1. Create and then complete a basic workout that meets the following criteria: allows you to be in your target heart rate range for 70% of a 60 minute workout, uses at least 3 different machines, and allows for proper cool down and flexibility. 2. Write down your recommendation to a student who has very bad knees but still wants to develop a cardiorespiratory workout.
