Catalog Description Formerly known as PHED 27A Hours: 36 activity per unit Description: Fundamental theory and practice, including passing, dribbling, shooting, formations, and strategy. Primary emphasis on the application of skills, rules, and introduction to strategy in game play. (CSU, UC-with unit limitation) Course Student Learning Outcomes CSLO #1: Differentiate basic soccer attacking and defending formations and strategies. CSLO #2: Explain the FIFA laws of the game. CSLO #3: Describe and perform fundamental skills: dribbling, passing, shooting, receiving, tackling, heading and goalkeeper catching. Describe and perform basic soccer offensive and defensive formations and strategies. 2. Outline the F.I.F.A. laws of the game. 3. Identify the correct dimensions and layout of playing area; 4. Describe and perform fundamental skills: dribbling, passing, corner kicks, scoring kicks, receiving, tackling, heading and goalie play. 5. Perform basic soccer skills to allow competition in intra-class competition stressing fundamentals. 6. Demonstrate sportsmanship and fair play. 7. Compose and perform basic components of attack and defense. Sample question: When trapping a ball, what part of the foot would you use? Skill Demonstrations Example: Student will be able to successfully dribble the soccer ball through field cones set on the field. A performance assessment rubric will be utilized to evaluate skills demonstration. Repeatable No Methods of Instruction Activity Distance Learning Activity: Instructor will facilitate a class discussion on the importance of correct defensive strategy. The students will be put into small groups and given a game situation. The students will construct an appropriate defense which they will report to the class. Students will be assigned to create their own pre-game warm-up format. Instructor will facilitate a discussion in which the strengths and weaknesses of each proposal are analyzed. Distance Learning Discussion by the instructor on the F.I.F.A. laws of the game. The students discuss the laws in small groups. Instructor will lead a discussion sportsmanship and fair play. The students will discuss the topic in small groups. Typical Out of Class Assignments Reading Assignments 1. Read instructor provided materials on origins of soccer and be prepared to discuss in class. 2. Perform an internet search for soccer related material and complete a synopsis on the article. Writing, Problem Solving or Performance 1. Watch a soccer training session and write a 1-2 page analysis of the drills and how they related to each soccer skill. 2. Write a pre-game stretching exercise explaining why each exercise is important.
