Catalog Description Hours: 54 lecture Description:History of Rock and Roll music in social, political, cultural, and economic context. Includes guided listening and video presentations to show the evolution of Rock from its roots to current stylistic trends. (CSU, UC) Course Student Learning Outcomes CSLO #1: Evaluate the socio-economic factors and music history that contributed to the creation and development of Rock and Roll in the United States in the 20th century. CSLO #2: Analyze the influences of social, political, ethnic, and gender issues on Rock and Roll and Rock and Roll's influence on those issues. CSLO #3: Identify and distinguish the influence of the world cultures (i.e., Britain, Africa, Middle East, the Caribbean, and Central and South America) on Rock and Roll and how Rock and Roll influence music in those cultures. Define and apply techniques of analytical listening with musical examples; 2. Assess national and international historical events of the past five decades and the influence of these events on the Rock and Roll idiom; 3. Analyze the influences of social, political, ethnic, and gender issues on Rock and Roll; 4. Recognize and distinguish the influence of the world cultures (i.e., England, Africa, Ireland, Middle East, South America, Mexico) on Rock and Roll; and 5. Compare and contrast substyles of the Rock and Roll genre. Discuss the influence of Rock music on Jazz in the 1960-70s in groups of three to four students, then share with the class. Students will be evaluated based on participation. 2. Discuss the historical impact of the Vietnam War on the folk and rock musical communities as reflected in song lyrics in groups of three to four students then share with the class. Students will be evaluated based on participation. Essay Examinations Example: . Compare and contrast an example of surf sound music with British invasion music. Rubric Grading. 2. Present in class a biographical report on a prominent Rock artist of the 1960s, highlighting their contribution to that era. 2. Write a paper outlining the development of women rock singers from the 1060s through the 1990s. Repeatable No Methods of Instruction Lecture/Discussion Distance Learning Lecture: Instructor will lecture on the surf sound, accompanied by audio and video presentations. After the topic of surf sound is introduced, instructor will pose questions concerning that material designed to stimulate discussion and student input concerning the impact and relevance, historically and socially of that information. (Objective 1) Instructor will lecture on the impact that East Indian musical performance practices, including instrumentation and traditional ragas, had on 1960's rock and roll compositions. Questions will be posed by the instructor aimed at stimulating discussion concerning the historical and social relevance of that information. (Objective 4) Distance Learning After an on-line lecture on the influences of social, political, ethnic, and gender issues on Rock and Roll, students will write a report outlining critical elements of a specific influence. Report will be posted for other students to provide feedback. Each student is to read a minimum of 4 other student reports and provide feedback. (Objective 3) Typical Out of Class Assignments Reading Assignments 1. Read text on the surf sound and be prepared to discuss in class. 2. Research historical relevant material from library (magazine articles, books, etc.). Example: History of Woodstock and be prepared to discuss in class. Writing, Problem Solving or Performance 1. Submit a written assignment answering a relevant question from the instructor, such as on the surf sound. 2. Participate in classroom discussions concerning the social and historical relevance of the lecture and presentation material.
