Includes breath management in relation to posture, expressive singing via physical movement, unifying the register and range extension, resonance and vocal registers, expressive singing, stage presence, and the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to sing Italian songs. Vocal exercises and songs from various music styles are performed including selections made by students. (CSU, UC)

Catalog Description Prerequisite: Completion of MUS 39B with grade of "C" or better Hours: 54 (18 lecture, 36 activity) Description: In-depth study of specific elements of efficient vocal technique and performance. (CSU, UC) Course Student Learning Outcomes CSLO #1: Demonstrate progress in development of a free, coordinated tone, dynamic and vocal range and increased resonance supported by efficient diaphragmatic-costal breath management. CSLO #2: Demonstrate continued progress in the elements of legato vocal technique utilizing proper attack and release of pure tones, correct intonation, changing pitch, volume, and timbre by performing an art song. CSLO #3: Perform a solo classical or Broadway song demonstrating relaxed articulation and modification of Italian and/or English vowels and consonants. Use of IPA for interpreting Italian pronunciation. 2. Use of inhibition to improve posture and efficient breathing for singing. 3. Use movement to explore the expressive possibilities of the voice. 4. Define different vocal registers. Activity Objectives: 1. Demonstrate the use of inhibition as a way to improve posture and breathing for singing. 2. Demonstrate movement as a way to enhance the expressive possibilities of the voice. 3. Demonstrate different vocal registers. 4. Demonstrate vocalizes designed to extend the vocal range. 5. Perform four vocal solos demonstrating efficient breath management, expressive singing, vocal registers and range extension. This project will be given in the form of an oral presentation. Projects Example: Students will be assigned a vocalist to listen, research and report on. This project will be given in the form of an oral presentation. Reports Example: Students will be required to attend two vocal recitals or choral concerts and write concert reports on tone, diction, performance techniques and other concepts discussed in class. Skill Demonstrations Example: Student will demonstrate specific vocal techniques within the context of a performance of a song as discussed in class. Students will give constructive comments to each other under the direction of the instructor, discussion will be student led. Repeatable No Methods of Instruction Activity Lecture/Discussion Distance Learning Activity: Based on a previous lecture on Italian Art song by the instructor, students will form small groups to identify and analyze their Italian Art song’s musical elements, specifically locating terms and articulation that would influence how they would perform their song. After this activity, students will report to the class with their findings and perform their assigned songs incorporating everything they have learned. Lecture: Instructor will lecture on the elements of IPA and will ask students to identify specific elements in the solo pieces they've been assigned. Students will then examine their pieces for correct diction and application of IPA. Distance Learning Instructor will present two contrasting Art songs in a foreign language, guiding the class through performance problems each offers, asking specific questions regarding diction. Typical Out of Class Assignments Reading Assignments 1. Read and submit a three page research paper on an important vocalist in the genre. 2. Read two assigned articles that address the collaboration of vocalist and accompanist and summarize in a three page paper. Writing, Problem Solving or Performance 1. Write abstracts for given reading assignments. 2. Performance critique for one's self and for other singers. 3. Creating personal stories using the text of a given song. 4. Transcribe text into IPA. Other (Term projects, research papers, portfolios, etc.) 1. Determine what physical movement expresses the content of a given song. 2. Listen to vocalists and determine which vocal register is being used. 3. Practice singing a specific vocal selection. 4. Memorize a vocal selection. 5. Read materials associated with vocal expression. 6. Use IPA to interpret Italian language. 7. Learn the word-for-word translation of a given Italian song.
