Catalog Description Prerequisite: Completion of MUS 40C with grade of "C" or better or equivalent with permission of instructor Hours: 54 (36 lecture, 18 laboratory) Description: Continuation of MUS 40C, with music drawn from intermediate, late intermediate to early advanced levels. Ensemble playing, sight-reading, harmonization and improvisation developed. Individual needs and interests considered. (CSU, UC) Course Student Learning Outcomes CSLO #1: Play major and minor scales in all keys hands together for spanning three octaves at a steady tempo; perform primary chords in these keys. CSLO #2: Identify meters and demonstrate rhythm patterns including syncopation, double-dotted notes, sixteenths, and dotted eighth-sixteenth pattern. CSLO #3: Sight-read two-part and four-part texture. Identify meters and write rhythm patterns including syncopation, double-dotted notes, sixteenths, and dotted eighth-sixteenth pattern. 2. Define basic Italian terms for tempo and dynamics; use basic musical symbols. 3. Demonstrate increased sensitivity to musical interpretation in performance of classical literature for the piano. 4. Transpose simple melodies and accompaniments. 5. Critique a piano performance and the interpretive choices of both performer and composer using standard musical terminology. 6. Identify and analyze keyboard literature in different historical periods. LABORATORY OBJECTIVES: 1. Play major and minor scales in all keys hands together for three octaves at a steady tempo; demonstrate knowledge of primary chords in these keys. 2. Play primary chord progression in all major and minor keys; 7th chords in root position (includes major major, major minor, diminished minor, full diminished), and play chords with added 6th. 3. Identify meters and clap rhythm patterns including syncopation, double-dotted notes, sixteenths, and dotted eighth-sixteenth pattern. 4. Harmonize melodies from a lead sheet with chord symbols. 5. Sight-reading two-part and four-part texture. 6. Perform four-hand duets with fellow classmates. Define a list of Italian expression terms: dynamics, tempos, articulations. 2. Identify harmonic, scale and formal structures of a piano piece. Problem Solving Examinations Example: 1. Sight-read a short level appropriate piano piece, being accurate in notes, rhythm and fingering choices. 2. Identify the correct time signature based on a written rhythm pattern. Skill Demonstrations Example: 1. Play a major and minor scale in requested key with both hands for three octaves at a steady tempo. Demonstrate knowledge of primary chords in these keys by playing them on the piano. 2. Perform a level appropriate solo with correct notes, rhythms, fingering, tempo, articulation, dynamics and stylistic expression. Repeatable No Methods of Instruction Laboratory Lecture/Discussion Distance Learning Lab: The Instructor will assign pairs of students level appropriate duets. Students will decide who is to play primo or secondo, collaborate in tempo and expressive decision making then perform in class. Instructor will demonstrate appropriate and ineffective methods of playing arpeggios. Students will practice arpeggios in major and minor keys and perform in class. Lecture: The instructor will lecture how to play a C Harmonic Minor Scale in octaves and its difficulties and provide an example of a piece of music in which it appears. Students will be placed in pairs to practice with one another as the instructor works with pairs as requested. The instructor will then have the students discuss and demonstrate their skill in individual performances. The instructor will assign an article on historical piano pedagogy methods for students to read then discuss, reflecting on their own early learning experiences. Distance Learning The above lecture/discussion activities will be presented via video lectures posted on Canvas and/or Collabra. Students will individually demonstrate skills by posting videos on Canvas and/or Collabra. Students will participate in Canvas discussion forums based on assigned readings. The above laboratory activities will take place via Collabra and/or Canvas. Instead of performing live for class, students will record themselves using the Collabra platform. Typical Out of Class Assignments Reading Assignments 1) Read an article about piano technique and compare with one's own technique. 2) Read a biography about a composer of piano literature and present findings to the class. Writing, Problem Solving or Performance 1) Write an evaluation of specific repertoire being prepared. Include historical references about the composer in general and this piece in particular. 2) Write an essay about the music being prepared and include perceptions of any performances (recorded or live) of the piece. Other (Term projects, research papers, portfolios, etc.) Attend a public recital or musical performance featuring the piano and write a three-page paper reflecting one's observations.
