Catalog Description Hours: 18 lecture Description: An exploration of the Recreation and Hospitality majors with an emphasis on degree options, career mapping, internship opportunities, job outlooks, occupational and professional requirements, pay ranges, and employer expectations. Students will get hands-on experience related to various Recreation, Hospitality and Tourism occupations and gain insight into job roles and responsibilities through guest speakers. (CSU) Course Student Learning Outcomes CSLO #1: Identify potential degree options in Recreation, Hospitality and Tourism. CSLO #2: Identify and differentiate the career opportunities in the Recreation, Hospitality and Tourism sectors. Effective Term Fall 2025 Course Type Credit - Degree-applicable Contact Hours 18 Outside of Class Hours 36 Total Student Learning Hours 54 Course Objectives Identify and differentiate between various degree programs and specializations within Recreation, Tourism and Hospitality, and assess how they align with personal career goals. Analyze and map potential career trajectories in the Recreation, Hospitality and Tourism sectors, including emerging trends and opportunities. Gain insights into real-world job roles and responsibilities through interactions with guest speakers from diverse sectors within the industry. Outline the steps to locate, apply for, and excel in internship opportunities, emphasizing the importance of practical experience. Examine current job outlooks and future trends in the Recreation, Hospitality and Tourism industries to inform career decisions. Identify the educational and professional qualifications necessary for various roles, including certifications and continuing education. Explain pay ranges for different positions, including factors that influence salary, and learn strategies for salary negotiation. Discuss the key skills and attributes sought by employers, focusing on both technical and soft skills essential for success in the industry. The instructor will ask the students their thoughts on how those opportunities could lead to a job and or upward mobility in the industry. Reports Example: Using periodical journals and other online resources, students will research the job market for a specific industry and write a 2 page paper interpreting the data and identify future opportunities in the Recreation, Hospitality and Tourism sector chosen. Repeatable No Methods of Instruction Lecture/Discussion Distance Learning Lecture: The instructor will deliver information pertaining to job readiness in the Hospitality industry and the certifications needed for food handling. The lecture will detail the skills associated and the experience needed. Student will be prompted with questions on how they can make themselves job ready. Distance Learning Students will be presented with a interview between the instructor and a manager in the field of recreation. The instructor will ask questions to the manager on recruitment of new employees and job readiness. The video will be recorded in LMS with closed captions. The students will be prompted with a discussion on thoughts and questions to the interview. Typical Out of Class Assignments Reading Assignments To prepare for an in-class discussion, students will read an article, from "Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research" on the hospitality in industry advancements with AI and the implications for the future of the industry. Writing, Problem Solving or Performance Students will create a letter of interest for a potential internship. The student will also create a resume to go along with the letter of interest.
