Catalog Description Hours: 54 lecture Description: Leadership of recreation activities with emphasis on the social development and integration of individuals into group programs, mechanics of planning, techniques of presentation and a repertoire of social activities as tools of social recreation. (CSU) Course Student Learning Outcomes CSLO #1: Analyze effective leadership resources and methods for conducting recreation activities. CSLO #2: Explain relevant professional issues that center around performing recreation service in a sound, safe, and respectful manner. CSLO #3: Outline effective program planning principles and guidelines used in the hospitality industry. Determine a conceptual foundation of leadership; 2. Analyze relevant professional issues that cluster around performing recreation services in a sound and respectful manner; 3. Evaluate effective program planning principles and guidelines; 4. Examine the mechanics of planning recreation activities; 5. Identify and apply relevant decision making and problem solving skills for individual and group recreational situations; 6. Use appropriate presentation skills necessary for recreational activities; 7. Analyze effective leadership resources and methods for conducting recreation activities; 8. Apply current campus, capital, or regional issues into the educational experiences; 9. Relate community with class-based experiences; 10. Organize a repertoire of recreational resources; and 11. Plan and execute recreational activities by age group and for people who face special circumstances. Example: Compare and contrast three relevant professional issues that cluster around performing recreation services in a sound and respectful manner. Projects Example: Design and set-up three effective leadership resources for conducting recreational activities. Repeatable No Methods of Instruction Lecture/Discussion Distance Learning Lecture: Instructor will facilitate a small group learning activity in which students will plan, organize and evaluate recreational activities and submit a written report. Distance Learning Instructor will present an on-line lecture and facilitate a discussion in which several case studies will be presented on participant motivation or outdoor recreation leadership. Students will compare and contrast the variables in each study and develop possible strategies for maintaining a high level of participant motivation. Typical Out of Class Assignments Reading Assignments 1. Read Chapter "Why is There Recreation Leadership" and submit, in outline form, a two page appraisal of the reading. 2. Read a handout on specific leadership techniques and submit a two page summary of the reading. 3. Read the Leadership Handbook course pack and complete the corresponding journal entries for each section. Writing, Problem Solving or Performance 1. Write a 2-3 page paper comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences in providing leadership services for special populations versus mainstream populations. 2. Plan and conduct a recreation activity of your choice. The activity might be one of the following: a defroster, a socializer, inactive or active game, cooperating game, arts and crafts project, environmental interpretive activity, musical game, dance, informal dramatic and/or stunt, a multi-cultural theme activity and self-improvement, outdoor or fitness activity. Prepare a detailed activity sheet summarizing the necessary planning considerations for the activity.
