Catalog Description Hours: 54 lecture Description: Introduction to interdisciplinary active reading skills, information literacy, financial literacy, critical thinking, and student success skills. Examines intersectionality and cultural humility as related to student identities, experiences, support, and engagement. (CSU, UC) Course Student Learning Outcomes CSLO #1: Apply reading strategies, critical thinking, and information literacy to create a project. Will be graded using a rubric developed by the instructor and shared with students. Objective Examinations Example: Example of Multiple Choice Question: Which of the following will positively affect your credit score? a. Applying for a new loan b. Credit balances at or near the limit c. Paying your bills on time d. Having no credit cards Problem Solving Examinations Example: Students will be assigned to research the cost of a 4-year degree at a particular college and then develop a strategy to afford their education using various financing options. Will be graded using a rubric developed by the instructor and shared with students. Projects Example: One Book, One College Poster Project - Students will research and create a presentation on a topic related to the One Book, One College text. Will be graded using a rubric developed by the instructor and shared with students Skill Demonstrations Example: Students will develop and submit a weekly schedule that incorporates class time, study time, work, and other life priorities. Will be graded using a rubric developed by the instructor and shared with students. Repeatable No Methods of Instruction Lecture/Discussion Distance Learning Lecture: Following lecture and activities on the topic of developing a growth mindset, instructor asks students to get in small groups and discuss struggles they've had since attending college and what they learned from them. Then the instructor assigns students to write a letter to a future RISE 1 student telling them about a struggle they have experienced in college, what they learned from it, and any advice they have for the student. The instructor then collects their letters, and saves them in order to give them back to them during stressful times of the semester, such as final exams, before big projects are due, etc. The letters are copied and saved (names removed) for students in future RISE 1 classes and the original will be added to student’s e-portfolio. Distance Learning Instructor will provide lecture through video concerning a book/e-book related to a multicultural topic. Instructor will create videos with instructions on how to create a project based on the multicultural book to advocate for an underrepresented population. Students will research in the online library and create a presentation and/or video with information from the book and/or library and submit it online. Typical Out of Class Assignments Reading Assignments A. One Book, One College: All sections of the course will be reading the same full-length text. A sample assignment based on the text is: Apply active reading strategies, including annotation, as you read chapter 1. Be ready to discuss in small groups next class. B. Read article on procrastination. Reflect on how procrastination affects money management and achieving goals. Writing, Problem Solving or Performance A. Use after-reading strategies, including summarizing, for chapter 3. Submit a 1-page paper to be included in your e-Portfolio reflecting on how the material relates to your life or experiences. B. Research at least 2 local or national scholarships using online sources and complete the personal statement or other writing requirement. Include these in your e-Portfolio and be prepared to share in groups next class.
