Prerequisite: Completion of HDEV 1 or 9 with grade of "C" or better; completion of HDEV 2 with grade of "C" or better
Hours: 54 lecture
Description: Presents an overview of knowledge and skills related to providing developmentally appropriate curriculum and environments for all young children. Explores teaching strategies and curriculum development based on theoretical frameworks, observation, and assessment. Emphasizes the teacher’s role in supporting development and learning across the curriculum, including all content areas. (C-ID ECE 130) (CSU)

Course Objectives

1. Describe and apply developmentally appropriate principles and teaching strategies to positively influence all young children's development and acquisition of knowledge and skills.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the many aspects of the teachers' role in providing best and promising practices in early childhood programs.
3. Compare and contrast play-based curriculum that supports children's cognitive, language, creative, physical and social/emotional development.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the assessment, curriculum planning, implementation, documentation cycle and use it to plan, implementation, and evaluate sample ECE activities.
5. Identify theoretical and program model implications for curriculum.
6. Develop environments and teaching strategies to accommodate individual developmental needs of young children.
7. Modify career portfolio begun in HDEV 2.
8. Demonstrate knowledge of the California Preschool Learning Foundations and Curriculum Frameworks.
9. Describe and apply the Classroom Organization components from the CLASS assessment tool.

          Methods of Evaluation

          • Objective Examinations
            • Example: Read prompts involving different areas of curriculum and identify which of four multiple responses best reflects concepts as learned in class. Standard grading.
          • Problem Solving Examinations
            • Example: Apply conflict resolution techniques to written or video scenarios. Identify desires outcomes and consequences, and identify best practice guidance techniques. Graded best on completeness and application of guidance strategies as learned in class.
          • Projects
            • Example: Write curriculum for a specific interest area and present activities to the class. Project will be graded on developmental appropriateness and completeness of activity instructions.
          • Reports
            • Example: Students will read current articles on curriculum topics and answer questions applying what you learned and how this could be utilized in a classroom setting. Report will be graded by a rubric developed by the instructor and shared with students.
          • Skill Demonstrations
            • Example: Successfully implement two lesson plans with children. Graded based on completeness as well as reflections of how implementation could have been improved.

          Lecture:

          1. Instructor lectures on how to create an activity plan with objectives based on Desired Results.
          2. Students must plan and implement two developmentally appropriate activities and implement them with children in laboratory settings.

          Distance Learning

          1. Instructor creates a Voice Thread PowerPoint on the role of the teacher. Students must post comments to the voice thread to check for understanding on lecture material.

          1. Students will be assigned specific articles covering curriculum models and summarize each. 2. Students will read specific text regarding outside environmental designs in light of current concerns about liability and sustainability and be prepared to discuss in class.

          1. Students will write lesson plans in assigned content areas. 2. Students will implement lesson plans in laboratory settings. 3. Students will create written plan for effective behavior management during a lesson plan based on the CLASS assessment tool.
