Description: Course designed for older adults. Introduction to a series of films examined for originality, creative virtuosity, impact, structure, and direction. Selected films illustrate a specific dimension of film genre. Genres change with each offering. May be repeated. (noncredit)

Course Objectives

The older adult learner will, through class discussion and observation:
1. Define "theme" and analyze reading to identify its role in film.
2. Discuss and apply concepts of cinematography to the analysis of film.
3. Identify the perspectives of the film regarding
a. direction
b. cinematography
c. editing
d. acting
e. screenplay
4. Develop an appreciation and ability to analyze film.
5. Through repetition of the course, the older adult learner will increase mastery of film and synthesize knowledge of theme and perspective.

            Methods of Instruction

            • Lecture/Discussion

            Lecture:

            1. The instructor will provide a short overview of "North By Northwest" film to be viewed, show the film, and then lead a class discussion that identifies and develops the theme, structure, and cinematography of the film.
            2. The instructor will divide students into small groups to complete a written assignment on the structure of film. Small groups will be supported as they define and provide examples of the elements of film.

            1. Using the internet, find a review of the film "The Birds" and compare it to your own analysis after viewing the film. 2. Read and be prepared to discuss course handouts on the role of theme in film.

            Writing, Problem Solving or Performance

            1. Write a short paper that explores the role of particular films within an identified series of works. 2. In a class discussion, compare and contrast your evaluation of "North By Northwest" with that of others in the class.
