Description: Survey of the major cultural, social, and political traditions and institutions of India, China, Japan, and Southeast Asia from the earliest civilizations to the 17th century. Includes imperial and dynastic developments, artistic and philosophical expression, economies and commerce, and impact of pan-Asian Buddhist and Muslim movements. (CSU, UC)

Course Objectives

1. Identify primary and secondary sources and describe their use as evidence in historical analysis;
2. Describe the geography of Asia and analyze its general effects on human civilization of the area;
3. Compare and contrast Paleolithic and Neolithic cultures in Asia;
4. Describe the development and characteristics of major economic, political, and social institutions of the Shang, Chou, Han, T'ang, Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties in China. Discuss the transitions between each dynasty;
5. Describe the development and characteristics of the political, economic, and social institutions of ancient and classical Japan and analyze the important influences of China, Korea, and Buddhism on this culture;
6. Describe and analyze the development and characteristics of the major political, economic, and cultural institutions of medieval Japan;
7. Compare and contrast the philosophical, religious, and artistic expressions of ancient, classical, and medieval Japan;
8. Describe the development and characteristics of the earliest civilizations and dynasties of Ancient India, and analyze their significance on India civilizations;
9. Describe and analyze the evolution and operation of the political institutions of medieval India;
10. Compare and contrast the characteristics in the development of the ancient and medieval kingdoms of Southeast Asia in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand;
11. Analyze the impact of contact with the West on the Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and other kingdoms of the Southeast Asia.

    • Classroom Discussions
      • Example: "After reading the ANALECTS of Confucius, discuss the qualities of 'filial piety.'" In-class discussion will be based upon a short writing assignment students complete prior to class.
    • Essay Examinations
      • Example: "Considering Marco Polo, consider the reasons Marco Polo would have been a good envoy of the Khan." Take-home essay assignment will be graded based upon a rubric shared with students.
    • Objective Examinations
      • Example: 1. "The Confucian world view holds that a. aristocrats are the only ones who have the ability to govern. b. a gentleman can be developed regardless into which class he was born. c. one's greatest respect should be paid to one's mother. d. governments must be strict and ruthless in order to avoid chaos." Select the answer that best completes the sentence and then provide greater detail to the answer by including 2-3 sentences of your own.

    Lecture:

    1. Instructor assigns a cohesive reading plan for students to explore the important influences of China, Korea, and Buddhism on Japan. Instructor uses lecture/discussion to explore with students the assigned readings, modeling how to build from prior knowledge and assigned reading to develop coherent understanding.

    Distance Learning

    1. Instructor selects sample primary source material on the development and characteristics of major economic, political, and social institutions of the Han Dynasty and assigns student readings. Then, instructor facilitates student analysis and interpretation during lecture and discussion. This assignment could be done in a traditional on-ground class or as a distance learning lecture (text and/or audio) and discussion assignment.

    1. Complete the assigned reading and take a quiz "the Growth of the Emperors Power in Qin and Han China." 2. Read "The Travels of Marco Polo," prepare answers to questions on this material, discuss the material in class, and complete a quiz on the assigned questions.

    1. Complete the assigned original source readings on Medieval Japan and Zen Buddhism. Write responses to questions from original source readings. 2. Write an essay responding to assigned questions concerned with the monograph, "The Death of Woman Wang."
